The Metaphor of a Startup

by Zach October 24, 2012

It’s the story against which metaphors are readily made. The starting of a new business. The pushing of the big green button (or the throwing of a small red lever — whichever visual you prefer). Well this isn’t ‘like’ starting a new business, because we are starting a new business and its launch feels every bit as monumental as any metaphorical implications could possibly suggest.

Welcome to Kitsbow. Our mission is hardly singular, but the bit in which you might be most interested is that we are creating impeccable mountain bike apparel for fellow obsessives. After months upon months of designing, tweaking, unboxing, and re-boxing, the gears are finally starting to creak and groan with new life. Picture water spilling down carefully laid troughs powering a massive wooden cog, or lights stuttering to life on the cockpit dashboard of a 747. Whatever visual one may conjure, rest assured that throwing the ignition switch on an online apparel label is hardly as poetic as one might imagine. One moment the site is hidden from the Internet, and the next, you can shop our shorts and jersey. There, we’re live! But imagery aside, we are quite simply giddy with excitement. We are stressed. For lack of a better expression, we’re “nervous like a new mountain bike apparel label who has just launched its first product line.” We created something we are insanely passionate about, and we can’t wait to see what you think of it. We can’t wait for you to get our SASTAN Jersey sweaty, and our Soft Shell A/M Shorts dirty, and are equally eager to hear about your experiences in them. We’d also love to hear what you think about the site itself — another lovingly laborious reflection of our passion for pure design simplicity and inspiring photography in awesome riding locales. This, of course in particular regard to Tumalo Falls, Paulina Peak, Smith Rock, and the Metolius Windigo Trail in beautiful Bend, Oregon where we set our first photo shoot.

From the company’s conception to the launching of the site, there are precious few ways to sum up how much has gone into this experience, so perhaps a heartfelt ‘thank you’ is most appropriate. Thanks to our loved ones for their patience with the late nights, thanks to our excellent suppliers and partners, and of course thanks to you for waiting it out. It’s surreal enough to be able to ride in something we created ourselves, but moreso to finally be able to share that joy with you. We couldn’t be happier that you’re along for the ride.

Enjoy the trail.

Spring Bikepacking 101

by Nicholas Haig-Arack March 29, 2018

A proper bikepacking trip can consist of one short local overnighter or a multi-week expedition into unknown territory. There are many ways to do it and not one of them is wrong. That said, there are certainties – lessons culled from hard-earned, real life experience – that we’d like to share.
